Since 2005, Dr. Angelo Cignarelli has been involved in research at the Section of Endocrinology and Metabolic Diseases of the Department of Emergency and Organ Transplantation, University of Bari. He has worked on various research topics in the endocrine-metabolic field, with a specific focus on the biology of adipose tissue and on adipose tissue abnormalities in obesity. The studies on insulin action in human adipose tissue in vivo and in cultured adipocytes and adipocyte precursors in vitro, on the molecular physiology of the different types of adipose tissue, and on the identification of novel regulators of adipogenesis have been published in international journals with a total impact factor of 72 and an H-index of 8. Dr. Cignarelli is also involved in clinical research, with a specific interest in epidemiology applied to obesity, and has developed a significant expertise in designing and conducting clinical trials.

He has worked in the Project LIBRA, an international project - unique in Italy - funded by the pharmaceutical industry Novo Nordisk, an international leader in the treatment of diabetes, for the investigation of long-acting insulin analogue, Detemir, on human adipocyte differentiation.

He is also in charge of tutorial activity for undergraduate, graduate and PhD students at the Section of Internal Medicine, Endocrinology and Metabolic Diseases, Department of Emergency and Organ Transplantation, University of Bari. This activity implies supervision of clinical training for young doctors, teaching of research methods and laboratory techniques, writing final dissertations for graduation in Medicine, Biotechnology, Dietetics, Specialization in Endocrinology and Metabolic Diseases, and PhD in Endocrinological and Metabolic Sciences, and also the organization of basic and clinical seminars.

Since 2009, he has been enrolled as Fellow in the teaching program of “Biotechnology applied to endocrine pathophysiology”, within the Graduate Program in Medical Biotechnology and Molecular Medicine.

Since 2010 he is engaged as part of the Italian Society of Endocrinology (SIE) for the development of young scientific research, through participation in the Club "Endocrinology Young in Italy" and "Youth Commission-SIE"
