This MOOC, developed under the “SustTourTraining. Strengthening the Tourism value chain in small fascinating Mediterranean Towns” through adult education focusing on sustainability” project, co-funded by the Erasmus+ programme, is designed to provide adult learners and tourism professionals with the knowledge, tools, and skills needed to promote sustainability across the tourism value chain. Structured around key thematic modules, it explores the intersection of economic development, cultural preservation, and environmental stewardship within the tourism sector.

By the end of this course, participants will be able to:

  • Understand core principles of sustainable tourism and how they apply across the value chain.
  • Analyse the environmental and social impact of tourism activities using data-driven tools.
  • Develop and promote sustainable tourism business strategies.
  • Communicate responsibly and effectively, integrating ethical branding and digital marketing approaches.
  • Plan tourism operations that respect and protect cultural and natural heritage.
  • Collaborate with local communities and suppliers to ensure inclusive and sustainable development.

This course is designed for adult learners, tourism professionals, and staff working in or with adult education centres, particularly those involved in tourism and hospitality. No prior background in sustainability is required, although a basic understanding of the tourism sector will be helpful. The course requires: basic digital literacy to navigate the MOOC platform and engage in practical assignments; a willingness to engage critically with real-world case studies and practical activities; Internet access for the online version or access to a participating adult education centre for the in-person modality.

The course will incorporate a blend of open educational resources, curated readings, and supplementary materials, including videos, infographics, and practical insights. All materials will be conveniently accessible directly on the platform.

Participants will engage with practical activities, real-world case studies, and expert-led content focusing on areas such as sustainable business models, stakeholder engagement, environmentally friendly digital promotion, heritage conservation, and responsible communication. This course consists of the following modules and a compilation of good practices that you can download: Fundamentals of sustainable tourism Sustainable business management in tourism Marketing & communication for sustainability Negotiation Environmental and cultural heritage awareness Practical tools for sustainable TourismThe course is offered in an online format and includes: 1. Video lessons – Presentation of short video contents created by experts and academic professionals. 2. Supporting materials – Complementary documents and recommended readings to deepen understanding. 3. Interactive modules – Quizzes, case studies, and scenario-based activities designed to reinforce learning. Participants can progress through the course at their own pace, with suggested timelines provided to support steady advancement.  

Upon completing the course activities, students will receive an attendance certificate.
