Scienza dei Materiali per Ingegneria

The course is divided into three sections.
Section 1: Fundamentals of materials science. The section deals with matter structure at a microscopic level (chemical bonding, crystal lattices, defects and diffusion) and its correlation with macroscopic materials properties (mechanical, thermal, electrical, etc.).
Section 2: Metallurgy. The section deals with Iron-Carbon phase diagram, steel classification (according to European standard) and the main heat treatments for Iron-based alloys.
Section 3: polymeric materials. The section deals with molecular structure of polymers and their classifications in i) thermoplastics and thermosets and ii) amorphous and semi-crystalline. The thermal and thermo-mechanical properties of polymers are also described.

To know matter structure at microscopic level (chemical bonding, crystal lattices, defects); To know main macroscopic properties of materials; To know phase diagrams and diffusion processes; To know Iron-Carbon phase diagram; To know main thermal treatments for steels; To know steel classification (according to European standard); To know molecular structure of thermoplastic and thermoset polymers and correlation with thermo-mechanical properties; To know thermal properties of polymers; To know solidification processes/mechanisms of polymers; To know the mechanical behavior of polymers and its correlation with molecular structure, time and temperature.
Basic knowledge of general chemistry (university level) is recommended.
Section 1: W.F. Smith – Scienza e Tecnologia dei Materiali – Ed. McGraw-Hill.
Section 2: W. Nicodemi – Metallurgia: principi generali – Zanichelli
Section 3: T.A. Osswald, G. Menges – Material Science of Polymers for Engineers, 3rd Edition – Carl Hanser Verlag.
The course is structured in video-lessons supported by slides commented by the teacher.
To acquire attendance certificate and open badge, student has to successfully pass the multiple-choice tests at the end of each section.
