About the Course
The course is divided into three sections.Section 1: Fundamentals of materials science. The section deals with matter structure at a microscopic level (chemical bonding, crystal lattices, defects and diffusion) and its correlation with macroscopic materials properties (mechanical, thermal, electrical, etc.).
Section 2: Metallurgy. The section deals with Iron-Carbon phase diagram, steel classification (according to European standard) and the main heat treatments for Iron-based alloys.
Section 3: polymeric materials. The section deals with molecular structure of polymers and their classifications in i) thermoplastics and thermosets and ii) amorphous and semi-crystalline. The thermal and thermo-mechanical properties of polymers are also described.
