Francesco Luzzini

My work focuses mainly on the Earth and environmental sciences, natural philosophy, and medicine in Renaissance and early modern Europe, with important forays into modern and contemporary contexts and with a methodological emphasis on interdisciplinarity, digital humanities, and textual criticism. In recent years, I have grown especially interested in exploring how the debate on mineral generation and the management of natural resources in early modern Europe influenced the development of natural philosophy, the Earth sciences, and the human-environment system.

My research themes and methods reflect my background, which is both scientific and humanistic. I am equally interested in the practical side of the history of science and in the history of theories and intellectual networks with their social, philosophical, political, and religious implications. Through the years, I have also developed a strong expertise in the replication of experimental practices on field and in laboratory.

I am Italian Editor for the Isis Bibliography of the History of Science. I believe in the digital humanities and Open Access ideals of democratization of knowledge: I am committed to making my work accessible to a virtually unlimited audience of students, scholars and academics, as well as to the general public.
